Now one of the largest neighborhoods on Chicago’s north side, Lakeview was first settled by farming families from Luxembourg, Germany and Sweden. One of the first permanent buildings was the Hotel Lake View where West Sheridan meets Lake Shore Drive. In 1889 Lakeview township was annexed into the city to accommodate the public services required to support the fast growing and large community which originally had a span of Diversey to north to Devon Avenue, Western Avenue to the lakefront. Today there are still many neighborhoods within Lakeview.
North Lake Shore Drive is lined with a mix of Beaux Arts and Vintage co-op and condominium buildings, high rises built mid to late century offering a mix a architecture and a high density capacity. Inland you will find many walk up buildings built in the late 1880’s and 90’s. The area just to the west and south of Wrigley you will find some wider lot and a beautiful collection of greystone 2 unit buildings ~ many since converted to single family homes. A favorite street to many is the historic Alta Vista which was built by a developer in 1904 who was inspired by rowhomes in London.
